My Idea on Estimation (I will edit this, because I don't think it is easy enough to understand)
Estimation is TRYING TO GET AS CLOSE TO THE ANSWER AS YOU CAN WITHOUT DOING SO MUCH WORK. I find myself estimating a bunch. So here is how I estimate:
It is easier to estimate if you don't have too much information to handle at once. If you wanted to estimate how much
9,656 + 3,291 is
you could just round.
about 9,700 + about 3,300
which is about 13,000
9,656 + 3,291 is
you could just round.
about 9,700 + about 3,300
which is about 13,000
When I am trying to buy something, I always round up so that I bring more than enough. So if I were buying something that costs 12,947$ I would brink 13,000$
But sometimes you have to think about tax. Most tax is 7%, but 10% is easier to deal with, and it is more, so I will be fine.
With 10% you just have to move the decimal point:
10% of 100.00 is 10.00
10% of 12,947.00 is 1294.70
But still, I just round up for the tax since I am bringing extra anyhow. You still don't want to round down, because you might round down too low, and will not have enough.
So I round 1294.70 To 1300.00
And so I should actually bring 13,000 + 1,300$
Which is 14,300$
And the actual cost with 7% tax is 13,853. Hehe. I actually brought almost a thousand dollars more, but when you are dealing with 10 thousands, that is fine.
Note: If you want a closer estimate. Just find out what 5% is, and then take the number halfway between 5% and 10% (the average). Because 5% is half of 10%.
10% is about 1,300$
5% is about 700$
halfway between 1300 and 700 is 1000
So you could bring 13,000 plus 1,000
Which is 14,000
Compared to 13,853
10% is more than enough
5% is less than enough
halfway in-between is a good estimate.
